‘When’s your next car boot’ asked one disgruntled badge waver who having drove past the ground, spotted a large number of motors parked in the Garmil lane ground and popped in for a look around only to be disappointed as instead we were hosting Rockingham from the South Yorkshire league in the Yorkshire Council Cricket play offs. ‘This is actually a cricket ground mate’ we offered as the boot enthusiast exited the ground.

Whitley Bridge descended upon us , no doubt looking to inflict “the double” after they comprehensively beat us at their ground. But Garmil Lane is a different proposition from the “shirt front” wickets and postage stamp field they are used too. Home in time for tea…and Mikey’s curfew - week 17 Askern (h)

We welcomed our nearest challengers, Askern, to Garmil Lane for what could be described as a “20 pointer” match. It looked like indecison was the order of the day ( bat or bowl ?) so it was a good toss to lose and Steve duly obliged, leaving all the blame for what might potentially follow, on the shoulders of Askerns skipper. We were invited to field and Lee and Jimmy took to the task with a succession of maidens and 1 wicket each with Askern 4 for 2 after 10 overs. A war of attrition ensued but the deadly duo came out on top having the opposition at 18 for 7 at drinks. Uncle Ken entered the fray (more…)

With the captain away at a Scottish wig convention the artist formerly known as the young captain returned to lead the team. Showing great form in 2010 YC won the toss and despite the covers only just being removed from the pitch following on from a 20 minute down pour, he swiftly choose to bat much to the bemusement of chief Monk Cotton who was clearly unaware my record in the past 5 years had read tosses won 93, times batted 1st 92!!! The only discrepancy being at Saville Stars where no one with clear thought bats 1st.

With kiwi 2 off buying a pushchair (for the baby) and a 100 pack of dummies (for throwing himself) wanna and Nic took the stage. (more…)

Dogs of All Kind Welcome- Week 15 South Kirkby (h)

As the headline states Nostell are the family friendly club (just ask the Reynolds clan!) an welcome all two legged and four legged members to Garmill Lane, unlike our close neighbour’s South Kirkby when visitors travel to their ground. They had obviously heard about Nostell’s fine reputation as hosts and bought many supporters with them for what could be a promotion defining match for both teams. (more…)

Following a week of torrential down pours the Nostell ground finally returned to a more natural green colour. The pitch had some firming up to do from Thursday and by Saturday was still softish but plenty in it for the batsman to work with. The fairies won the toss and placed us in the field. The captain, moved to make a ‘the rest can go forth and multiply’ speech based clearly on the sole logic of ‘a dressed pig, is still a pig’ got his men in the mood. (more…)

I had packed my Barnsley phrasebook, Linda had packed my cricket bag, and I set off full of anticipation to Wombwell. Looking forward to a tough encounter and possibly learning a foreign language ( Barnsley-speak). Ritchie had sadly withdrawn as he had concerns about infecting the lads with Chickenpox, a decison made for all the right reasons, but one we later were to perhaps regret.
