Saturday saw us travel to Fairburn to take on last years runners up on a very hard and true wicket. After losing the toss captain JimBob was asked to take the field Leroy and JC “Hammer” opened the attack and kept things relatively tight to start, Mal Meninga picked up a very tidy run out with a direct hit with only one stump to aim at to break the opening partnership. This was followed up with a further run out from the Ginger man Matt and the Captain himself who unleashed a rocket to dislodge the middle stump!. We dismissed Fairburn for 170 on a pitch that we thought should be worth around the 250 mark. Lee ended up with 4 wickets and he was well supported by Rich who picked up 2 and was unlucky to not have three when butter fingers Garrick dropped one behind the stumps. There were also good spells from Matt and the Hammer. At this point I must add that the big wicket of Craig Piggott saved us at least a 40 run chase when Lee had him bowled with a peach of an in swinger. Also when the going got tough in the field the old Nostell fighting sprit came out (in more ways than one!!).
The run chase began well with Rich Hardman and Jason Garrick opening the innings (I did have to ask Rich if the reason he always has to open with the Kiwis is because he is the only one that understands our ayes and bros!) and putting on 110 nfor the first wicket before Garrick was bowled for 38. Rich carried on and was run out by a direct hit for a very well made 65. Rich really did hit the ball well and cleanly and it was an innings that had us set for a easy win. Great knock Rich. Matt was dealt a rough one when he was adjudged LBW for 11 and it was left to the skip 22 not out and Mel 31 not out to finish the game off for us with only 3 wickets down and 12 overs to spare.
All in all a comprehensive win for us and a message has been sent out to the league that we are here to retain our title this season. Bring on Saville this week at Nostell.
