The return of the King – Week 19 Garforth PC
Garforth PC vs Nostell 30th August 2008 Match Gallery
Saturday saw Nostell visit Garforth PC for the last time and return victorious. Such a victory has been a rare event in the memory of all current players stretching back, dare I say it, 15+ years! This victory was the most convincing (or maybe only) victory at PC since the 2nd XI hammered the home team only to be deducted winning points for fielding too many 1st XI players. Maybe 7 was excessive, but a win is a win…..
Nostell won the toss and batted 1st on greenish wicket. Jimbob got the score moving along nicely and was joined by brother Matt after the 1st loss of wicket. Aided by 100g of deep heat and 50mg of morphine Matt anchored the innings and played some excellent shots down the ground ending on 81 not out. Half time drinks revealed a shock as it appeared that Garforth had brought out 11 bottles of tailor-made sports drinks. As the home team jostled to find their own bottle it remains to be confirmed if one bottle labelled ‘skip’ contained warmed milk and had a rubber teat on the end. At 2 down enter the king. Missing for half a decade due to DIY all was soon forgot as the front pad lunge was brought out after 2 balls. We all enjoyed seeing the return of the king; 20 runs was a good return and we all thought ‘can you play more often next year?’ Contributions from Statto and Mal left the target at 194.
Half time tea got me in the game for the 1st and only time before the chase began. Captain Jim followed opening of the batting, claiming the only fillet steak sandwich on offer at tea with erm…opening the bowling. However, a revolt was suspended due to some fine bowling in taking the 1st 2 wickets to fall. Statto, following his tour of the horse field the week before, remained wicketless. With his average, economy and strike rate escalating out of control he soon brought out the trusty bottle top and claimed another 5-for. Matt ‘I’m not bowling’ Rowett came on near the end, and 20 overs into Mal’s loosening up routine, to take a wicket with his 1st ball and 2 in all. Garforth ended 130-9 with Simon Lonsdale the star performer for PC.
The game ended with a sociable drink and a welcome chat. Talk of a pre-season friendly began before Nostell drifted home and talk of setting up a joint business commenced.
1 game to go.
