The Destroyer - Week 12 Ryhill (h)
Nostell St Oswalds vs Ryhill 4th July 2009 Match Gallery
It was the turn of our old friends from Ryhill and Havercroft to visit Garmill Lane for the first match in the second round. With the ground having recovered from the “boot” the previous Sunday, thanks to Eric’s many laps, the young captains intolerance of un useful helpers and Slicks love of the lawn mower, the ground was in tip top shape.
The young captain strode to the wicket, full of sun screen on his ever receding hair line, and had no hesitation in electing to bat first.
Nostell lost Big Rich early on when he chopped on, this bought the in form (and currently only carrying 10 injuries!) Matt to the wicket to join the king. Matt promptly signalled his intentions by dispatching the first ball he faced to the boundary. The king however was struggling to time the ball on a wicket that was proving to be tough to bat on. Matt bought up his fifty shortly after with another magnificent cover drive. The king continued to deny the visitors before he was dismissed for a well made 48. Slick was promoted in the order and lasted exactly 2 balls before the wicket undone him with a ball that stopped on him, I joined him on the duck bench 2 balls later with an identical dismissal….if it is good enough for the saviour then it is good enough for me!!. Mal strode to wicket, after having promised all and sundry a fire works show from his bat, and strode back soon after having given it away once again. Our Dale came and went with 2 swipes equalling one run and a stumping. The young captain and Matt got the runs flowing again until Matt was stumped by the impressive Batley behind the stumps for a well made 72. The innings stuttered and Nostell were dismissed for 157. A score we thought was winning score on a difficult wicket.
The home side took to the field knowing that in the corresponding match in the first round they dismissed Ryhill for just 37, and were a chance of repeating that if Uncle Ken and his partner Leroy could bowl with discipline.
It was Slick who turned out to be the destroyer with wickets with what seemed every other ball, He managed to knock the top 8 over and was looking for a 10 for when Uncle Ken produced an unplayable delivery to upset the Slick party….Lee picked up the final wicket to finish with the unbelievable figures of 8 overs 9 wickets for just 9 runs. It was without doubt the best display of bowling since the captain took 3 for in a mid week match a year ago!!!, take a bow Lee Hurst. He was well supported in the field with Matt taking a sharp chance, I managed to pocket two behind the stumps and the hammer got one to stick in the mid rift.
So it was a league record of 22 all out for the visitors, and it was unfortunate for them to strike Lee in such hot form with the ball. I am sure I speak on behalf of all of Nostell CC when I say I hope to see Ryhill bounce back and get some results going there way shortly. We look forward to seeing them again in the charity day in late August.
Next week we are off to Glasshoughton to try and build on the five point lead we have at the top of the league.
Well done to Matt for his valuable knock, and of course to Lee for his personal best bowling….I am sure the data sheet had a very large Saturday night work out. Also well done to Mal who did not pull away from a catch this week…the fact one did not come his way is very much secondary!!
