(almost) Perfect 10 - Hurst 9-9
With the season at the half-way stage, and the holiday season in full swing I was tempted (begged? - Ed) to play my first Saturday fixture of the season, and my PDCL debut, against Ryhill. On a warm and sticky afternoon Nostell batted first and made a steady start while I got stuck into the role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis, and the resting potential in cat nerve cells. Following the dismissal of Richie H, Matt joined the King and began a match winning partnership - the quality of which became apparent as the 2nd innings progressed. It is sad to report that I missed most of this due to respiration in mung beans, inheritance in peas, the evolution of copper tolerant grasses, and competition in duck-weed, but I hear that it was excellent. I did, however, see the collapse that followed Wayne’s dismissal, just short of his 50. Lee (more on him later), Jason, Mal, and Dale came and went quickly and after Matt was superbly stumped for 76 the end came in the last over with the score at 157, leaving me stranded but ready to cut loose (get real! - Ed) having not faced a ball.
Take a strip of grass, cut it, roll it, and bake it in hot sun for 2 weeks. Then soak it 24 hours prior to game time - the result of Mother Nature and not Tarby (this time). Then unleash the saviour with a new ball. Despite my potentially career-ending dropped catch Ryhill were dismissed for only 24 runs, with Lee taking 9-9 and ken 1 9-year-old. I was lucky to be in the side when Vinny Empsall took all 10 against Wakefield Hospitals - I even took the catch for the final out (any evidence of that? - Ed). I would have liked to have been in a 10-for game again…..maybe next time, but congratulations to Lee for a PB and another sponsor’s bonus. The disappointment rather killed the atmosphere after the game and the team drifted away as Dale proudly spent his girlfriend’s child-maintenance money on Fosters.
