Masterclass from the Ginge - Week 13 Glasshoughton (a)

Glass Houghton vs Nostell St Oswalds 11th July 2009 Match Gallery

ghmatt.jpgWeek 13 saw Nostell visit Glasshoughton for the first time with ex-Glasshoughton player and now Nostell Legend Steve Reynolds predicting a run fest against a team who ran us close earlier in the season.

I assume the sensitive young captain won the toss as Nostell batted first on a pitch with a bit of green in it, openers Richie and Wayne with Richie soon on his way back having lobbed a ball into the covers that held up on the pitch off left arm seamer Sharp, this brought in the ginger whinger who looked ‘in’ from ball 1, whilst Wanna spanked 4’s through the offside from the short bowling of Harrison.

The pair put on 45 before Wanna was out which brought me in at 4, Matt & I put on 40 for the 2nd wicket, Matt got most of them, I was seeing it like a pea before lobbing the ball to mid off, Mal then followed straight after to left arm spinner Cockroft who will have bowled many better deliveries than the half tracker Mal lollipopped to short fine leg.

In walked the sensitive young captain and a partnership followed with Jimmy dropping anchor for 21, the pair putting on around 70 with Matt hitting 4’s & 6’s for fun bringing up a chanceless ton in the process, his 4th he reminded me later but in this form he should add to it before the end of 2009.

ghken.jpgMatt was eventually out for 136, a PB and top nock - a late flurry with some agricultural swiching from Ken & more cultured dab and run from captainstartrip got us up to 225-8, a score we thought was a good one but the locals thought only par. The other highlight being a visit from ex Nostell legend Pete Askey with wife Val who were both in good form.

In reply Glasshoughton got off to a decent if uncertain start with our catching letting us down dropping both openers a total of 3 times before the breakthrough, 3 of the divisions form players Simpson, Portman & Sperrin got good starts for Glasshoughton but none produced the sort of match winning innings did for us leaving them 37 short of our total at 189-8.

A 9 point win for Nostell but it was a point dropped, we did actually bowl reasonably well including a quick 10 over spell from Dale but were let down by the catching, 11 drops in total, 3 each for Jimmy (slips) and JC who was keeping, 2 C&B drops for Me + 3 others meant Wanna had to leave early rather than after a pint as would have been the case had catches been held.

Word got round to Jase of the catching debacle resulting in planned naughty boy catching practice at nets on thursday.

A good win that should have been 10 points but we’ll take 9 as other results went in our favour, congrats from all to Matt for his PB of 136 and we look forward to the visit of Frickley next weekend…
