Promoted -Week 20 West Bretton (h)
This week we took to the home field knowing that a mere 8 points would secure us promotion to division two of next season’s Pontefract Cricket League.
The young captain lost the toss again (maybe he is not the tosser he was in his pre g/f days??) and was asked to strap on the pads and have a bat. We lost Rich early on to an inside edge, I joined the ginger and got through the first few balls to 5 before being run out whilst attempting a third run…..I think myself and the ginger need to get the yes calls right, and the no calls right……The saviour came and went and it was the captain who showed the grit and determination that we all know he has, to stay with Matt for a 50 plus partnership. The ginger got through to another 50 before hew as out for 55. The young captain came in and continued his good form with the bat in making a valuable 30 odd. The last over saw the unique batting combination of Grandad Tarbs, joined by young Harry and it was Harry who showed the way with a well timed boundary behind the wicket to get us to 139 on a sticky wicket.
After another wonderful tea we took to the field and it was the quiff who picked up a needed early wicket. Uncle Ken bowled a tight line for his first half a dozen overs to put the pressure on the batsman. Nostell picked up 3 more wickets to have West Bretton 60 for 4. The two batsman dug in and were looking dangerous at drinks and the decision was made to bring Lee back into the attack and he obliged with a wicket first ball, to a ball that the batsman should have really gone forward to. Dale picked up a wicket with possibly the worst ball ever bowled in cricket, much to the complete dismay of the batter. The young captain completed a very good all round match with 3 wickets and it was the saviour who cleaned up the tail to finish with another 5 for, to dismiss the visitors for 118 in a tight match.
So part one of the season’s mission is achieved and promotion is gained….well done all. Now for part two…good and a title to go with it.
On wards and upwards.
